PHA through continuous, tunable, safe and sustainable production
Replacing fossil sources by using organic municipal wastes and waste water treatment sludges as a feedstock, PHACTUS will produce biodegradable PHA at scale through a new, continuous flow process.
The mission
Conventional PHA production runs in stop-start batches: slow, costly and hard to scale. For the first time, PHACTUS uses an uninterrupted flow: mixed organic wastes and waste water sludges enter, microbial communities do the work, and ready-to-use biopolymers are produced.
The result is a closed-loop pathway from mixed residual urban waste to biodegradable PHBV, implemented through a scaled pilot plant, validating the economics and the chemistry together.
01 · Upstream
Acidogenic fermentation turns the mixed organic fractions of municipal solid waste and waste water treatment sludges into volatile fatty acids.
02 · Production
A continuous bioreactor selects microbes that accumulate PHA, monitored live with online sensors.
03 · Downstream
PHBV at three purity grades (through no, aqueous or green-solvent extraction), ready for moulding and extrusion
